Is 2018 your year – your year of getting your budget on lock, saving more money than you ever have before and/or paying off debt like a boss? Awesome – me too!
Picture it: December 2018. Your savings account actually has money in it – $1,000, $3,000 – maybe even more! You’ve been making solid payments toward your debt – maybe you’ve even paid it off! Perhaps you’re even saving now for a big trip in 2019, a down payment on a house – or money to eventually quit your job and start a freelance business 😉
Well, guess what? We’re only in February 2018, which means you have plenty of time to hit that goal. But how? By challenging your budget – oh, and some sweet giveaway prizes from Sunburnt Saver 🙂

Budget Challenge 2018
In 2018, I’m challenging you (and myself!) to a budget challenge: taking your budget, by category, and challenging each category to save more by spending less. For example, my grocery budget used to be $400/month, but this year I’m challenging my grocery budget to be $240 a month. How am I reducing my budget for groceries by that much? Take a look at January’s challenge here!
In February, I’ve reduced my gifts/special events/holidays budget to $25/month (reduced from $100/month). Here are some ways I’m reducing this part of my budget, and how you can too!
So what will you get if you sign up for the free Crush Your Budget Challenge?
- More savings in 2018
- Continued savings into 2019 and beyond, because you’ll learn how to keep expenses low
- More money for debt pay off, a house down payment, emergency fund, etc.
- A 4-week FREE email course with specific tips on reducing 4 major parts of your budget, including groceries, entertainment, utilities and more
Why is the free email course called “Crush Your Budget Challenge”?
I don’t know about you, but whenever I save more at the end of the month than I thought I would, I always think I “crushed it” – crushed my savings goals, crushed extra debt payoff, etc. I’m really proud of myself when I save more than I thought I could, which makes me feel like I’m crushing it!
Who is the Crush Your Budget Challenge for?
This free email challenge is for you if you already have a budget. Your current budget might not be a “pretty” budget, it might not be a budget you’re totally in love with, but this course is for you if you know what a budget is and have set one up before. Think of it as an “Intermediate Budgeting” email challenge 🙂
Haven’t set up a budget yet? Get my Free Beginner’s Guide to Budgeting ebook here!
This email challenge is for you if you:
- Ever look at your budget and think, why can’t I save more money and why do I keep overspending?
- Are ready to take your savings or debt repayment to the next level. If you’re wondering why you can’t save more money or put more money towards debt repayment, then this email challenge will help help you figure out how you can save more money from your budget and put more of it toward savings or debt repayment.
- Are curious about how other people‘s finances are. I’m going to be sharing my budget with subscribers to the email challenge. This is not something that other readers will get and I will only be sharing it with email challenge participants!
Once you’re done with the budget email challenge, you will have a better understanding of your budget. You’ll have reduced one if not more categories in your budget and you’ll have more money at the end of the month.
As a bonus, you’ll also get exclusive content upgrades including PDFs that only subscribers to the budgeting email course will get!

Budgeting Giveaway!
To help facilitate your budgeting challenge, I have a giveaway for you! These books and planner will help you to create your budget, stick to it, and learn how to work your budget.
The first giveaway is the book You Need a Budget, by the amazing people behind the You Need a Budget app. The YNAB app, as it’s called, it well-regarded as being a great budgeting app and so much more. I personally still like Mint more (because Mint is free!) but YNAB is an authoritative resource on budgeting. A great guide for budgeting!
The One Week Budget by Tiffany Aliche, also known as The Budgetnista! I’ve loved The Budgetnista’s work for a long time, and you probably know I’m also a fan of weekly budgets. In this book, Tiffany walks us through setting up a budget that WORKS in 7 days.
Finally, the third item for giveaway is this Balanced Budget Planner by Kimberly Palmer. This budget planner is really good for people who want to do a written down budget. Mint or other apps aren’t right for everyone, and if you want to track your budget by writing it down, enter to win this planner plus the budgeting books I mentioned above!

I need to read some of these. My personal budgeting up until Christmas was fantastic but last month and so far this month it’s gone entirely out of the window. I guess most people are the same!
Melissa says
Yes!! You’re not the only one, Karen – especially around the holidays! Luckily it sounds like you have a good handle on your gifts budget throughout the year! 🙂

$240 for groceries per month is very tricky, but doable. I’ve done something similar to this in the past for a family of 4. It takes dedication and research. This is a great budgeting giveaway, it’s a huge key to success. BUDGET is the only way to get it done.
Melissa says
Thank you Jen! Oh yeah, I think $240 for a family of 4 would be VERY tricky! Luckily it’s just me and my husband, and we could really stand to cut back on snacks (we snack a lot!) You’re right, it’s been a little trickier this month, because I needed olive oil (and good olive oil is expensive!) It’s just all about substitutions – and coupons! 🙂
Celeste Godoy says
Such a great giveaway! I definitely need help with budgeting! I feel like most of our money goes into dining out but there must be other ways we can save too.
Melissa says
Hi Celeste, thank you! This is the perfect giveaway if you’re curious about saving more and tracking your spending – it’s actually not hard to do and once you do it and the savings starts rolling in, you’re like, “why didn’t I budget sooner?!” 🙂 Good luck!
Amanda Martin says
This is a great idea! Luckily my hubby is a BIG saver and budgeter and helps keeps me on track, too. Currently saving a little extra for a trip to Paris with my mom!
Melissa says
It’s so nice when you have people on board!! Oh my gosh, a trip to Paris?! You have to blog about it!! 🙂
Mac Amato says
Oh man, we were so good at budgeting, but recently both lost our jobs! Thank goodness for savings. We are really looking forward to not living off savings anymore!
Melissa says
Oh no!! It’s a good thing you guys were good at budgeting and savings though, so you had a little cushion. I hope you guys find jobs again soon!
