Are you looking for a fun way to challenge yourself to save more money this year? Well, not to toot my own horn, but I came up with a pretty cool and fun way to save money every month called Weather Wednesdays.
What is the Weather Wednesdays Savings Challenge?
Weather Wednesdays is a savings challenge where for the whole year, you save as much as the high temperature in your city. This worked great as a millennial homeowner living in Phoenix, especially in the summer, when temperatures ranged from 100-115+ degrees!
Now that I live in Washington state, I know the savings challenge might not be as hard as Phoenix in August, but it’s still a fun way to incorporate more savings into my life. A high of 85 degrees in the summer might be a lot easier for my wallet than 99+ and up, but every little bit helps when you’re trying to save more.
You can even incorporate bullet journaling into your savings challenge if you’d like to participate in Weather Wednesdays – just check out this inspiring Instagram picture from @kacplanner below!
Looking for More Fun Savings Challenges?
Weather Wednesdays is a really fun way to get started saving in the new year, but it’s not your only option. After all, if your weather is still freezing until May, Weather Wednesdays might not work out very well for you! Luckily, there are several other ways to achieve your savings goals, like:
- A No-Spend weekend, week, or month – I love the way Birds of a Fire describes how to do a No-Spend challenge, which basically encourages you to spend no excess money for a certain amount of time, and then save that money you would have spent. I did it for about 6 months last year and it was awesome! I learned a lot about what I actually, truly needed, didn’t buy stuff I didn’t really need – and saved a bunch of money!
- Saving money quickly – sometimes the best way to save money is to just rip the band aid off and save money, quickly. I always thought it would take me so long to save $1,000, but not until I tried Lauren from The Practical Penny’s savings challenge! Basically, Lauren challenges you to save $77 a week until you reach $1,000 after 13 weeks. Sounds tough, but it really is doable!
- The spare change challenge – this one is a fun savings challenge to do with the whole family. My husband and I have actually been doing it for over a year now – we have a huge change jar that we consistently add change to every week! With this challenge, you gather all your spare change and save it in a jar, piggy bank, change-counting machine – any place safe where you can store change!
At the end of the month, quarter or year, take all your spare change to a change-cashing machine (or to your local bank – you’ll save money that way!) and there’s your savings!
Not sure if Weather Wednesdays will work for you? Lots of people recommend trying it! Weather Wednesdays has been featured on the AmeriChoice blog, Life and a Budget, the Unbank blog, and DoughRoller!
How about you? Do you personally love the hot weather? Or do you sometimes need extra motivation to enjoy it? If so, maybe Weather Wednesdays is something you should try! If you do, let me know, and we can bond over saving and the hot weather!

This is a really interesting idea! I’ve been complaining about the weather constantly (we moved to a hotter area this past Spring and I’m still not used to it), but it’s better to do something productive with it. I like having a blog for the sole fact that it does keep me accountable. Good luck!
Also, welcome to the blogosphere! You’ve listed some great ladies as your inspiration, and I’m looking forward to reading!

Thank you so much, E.M.! I love your blog too – definitely an inspiration (and proof it’s possible to have a life separate from the blog, since you’re able to keep your anonymity too!) And yeah, there’s only so much complaining you can do before you just have to do something productive!
