This actually works because symptoms of nervousness and excitement are often similar. Changing the narrative around anxiety can help you feel prepared for these big life moments.
2. Actually eat something beforehand
Your nerves are only going to feel more frayed if you don’t eat something before a job interview. Even though you think your stomach can’t handle any food, eating will help energize your body.
Grab lunch with a friend before your interview and indulge in one of your favorite meals. Talking over any anxieties you have with a trusted companion can help take the edge off as you down a few tacos. After all, Americans consume more than four billion tacos every year. Choose a food you love with a friend you love more and the interview won’t seem as scary.
You should also drink plenty of water, especially if you tend to sweat when you’re under stress. If you’re a coffee drinker, try trading this habit for tea, at least before the interview. The caffeine in coffee can cause jitters and boost harmful feelings of anxiety. By comparison, tea only has between 20 to 45 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.
3. Carry a toothbrush with you
While bad breath won’t cost you an interview, your concerns about your bad breath might. This could cause you to get in your own head, worrying about the flaws you have. During an interview, it’s important to stay present and in the moment.
You might mitigate bad breath by chewing gum, but if you forget to spit it out before the interview, you could come across as nonchalant or even unprofessional. By bringing a toothbrush with you, you can ascertain your breath smells good and you don’t have any bits of taco stuck in your teeth. It’s estimated that 38% of young professionals worry that the appearance of their teeth can undermine their job interviewing ability. Avoid this altogether by packing a toothbrush and a little to-go tube of toothpaste.
